CKDU Member News Feb 12, 2009

Dearest radio lovers & purveyors,
February 14th is a great day to remember that Beyoncé "I think I'm in love with my radio" Knowles, along with countless Halifax area listeners, is counting on you not to let her down. In between celebrating 25 years on FM, and 4 years at 88.1, take a moment to note that you are sending love in the form of words and music out over the airwaves every week. And we love you for it!
Keep up the good work.
Love,
The CKDU Newsletter

2. 8TH ANNUAL HOMELESSNESS MARATHON - FEB 23-24
Please help promote this amazing radio event on your show! Let listeners know that it's happening overnight from Feb 23rd to Feb 24th. Here's the details:
The eighth annual Homelessness Marathon will once again serve up 14 hours of people-powered radio, broadcast in 35 Canadian cities on Tuesday, February 23rd, from 6pm until 8am on Feb. 24th.
CKDU will broadcast live from outside St. Matthew's United Church, 1479 Barrington Street, right beside the Out of the Cold Emergency Shelter. We will offer hot food and hot coffee and tea all night long in our indoor listening booth. Halifax will broadcast live across the country from 7pm until 11pm, and then again between 1 am and 2 am.
Listeners are invited to call-in with their questions or comments toll-free: 1-866-594-7729. Listeners can tune in at 88.1 FM in Halifax, or online at www.ckdu.ca

3. 1ST ANNUAL CKDU SHOW SWAP WEEK: FEBRUARY 15 - 21
There's a growing list of interested show swappers! Email Tarek as soon as possible if you'd like to try something different next week and host a show in a different style or format. Just e-mail Tarek (tarek@ckdu.ca).

4. TRANSMITTER UPDATE
As you know: We are now broadcasting under a temporary license from atop Geizer Hill in Fairview. We are currently pumping only 28 watts through our exciter, which has turned out to be a fairly weak signal in many parts of the city.
Tell your listeners: If they have trouble picking up the signal, an antenna might just do the trick. Here's some information on improving your reception from WERU Community Radio in Maine.
http://weru.org/reception.html
Timeline: This current transmitter set up will remain until we have received approval from the CRTC for an amendment to our permanent license. Our application has been posted on the CRTC website: CRTC broadcast applications
You can leave comments there. The CRTC has been made aware of our current predicament with poor quality transmission. Keep your fingers crossed that our approval comes through in a timely fashion!

5. COMPUTER SPRING CLEANING! PLEASE DELETE OLD FILES
CKDU's computers are full to brimming. If you have an account on the PCR/MCR computers, please take a moment in the coming week to delete some old files that you don't need. Audacity or Ardour projects that are finished should be exported as ogg, mp3, wav or flac files, and then the projects should be deleted. Also, please consider burning your audio archives to CD and then deleting them from the computer. We have CDRs available for a small fee, or bring your own!

6. NATIONAL C/C RADIO CONFERENCE: June 2010
This year's NCRC is June 7th to 11th on Gabriola Island in British Columbia. The host station is Gabriola Coop Radio. You can check out what they have planned here: http://www.ckgi.ca/ncrc-2010/
CKDU has a small budget to help get programmers to the NCRC. It won't be an all-expenses-paid trip, but if you're interested in meeting community radio folks from far and wide while enjoying some fine Pacific ocean air, then consider going to NCRC Gabriola. In particular, we'd like to send some CKDU programmers to present workshops and share their skills and experience. Think about it!
Also: CKDU has volunteered to host NCRC 2011. Think about that!

7. LAST CHANCE FOR FUNDING DRIVE INPUT
We will be compiling the feedback from the Funding Drive 09 survey shortly. Please take the opportunity to share your thoughts on how FD went this year, and your ideas for how we can make it better in 2010. So far we have about 10 responses, my friends. That's pathetic! Just click here and take two minutes to share your thoughts: http://www.kwiksurveys.com/online-survey.php?surveyID=MLKEF_d9fdb1a4

8. STAFF EVALUATIONS COMING SOON
Yes, yes, it's tough being a CKDU programmer, because you're always having to fill out some form or another. But please remember, your input is vital to making CKDU a great community organization. The CKDU Board of Directors will be doing staff evaluations in the coming month, and they'll need your input on your experiences with staff at the station. Evaluations for this round: Erica, David, and Reed. Stay tuned for more info.

9. WELCOME TO OUR NEW KATIMAVIK PARTICIPANT, JOSH
A new member has joined Team CKDU! Please introduce yourself to Josh, a new volunteer with the Katimavik program, who will be working at CKDU for the next 3 months. Josh is an artistic guy and up for learning as much as he can about radio. Let's help him out! He's certainly helping us.
