CKDU Member News March 25, 2010

Dearest CKDUers,

Here on the internet, there's so many things to learn. Such as: paiting or hwaiting (???, ??? "fighting"), a Korean cheer that can roughly be translated as "Victory!" but can also be used as a word of encouragement (a la "Courage!").

So... HWAITING! to you, dear CKDU.

xox,

2. FRIDAY APRIL 2 SUB CLOSURE
As April 2 is a statutory holiday, the Student Union Building will be all locked up. But CKDU is still on the air! If you think you can't make your usual Friday show, please tell Tarek as soon as possible. Conversely, if you're available for emergency Easter Weekend fill-ins, let us know!

3. SOCAN COMETH...MARCH 31, APRIL 1, 2, 3
All programmers with a show airing on March 31 - April 3 will have to fill out the paper SOCAN logs! Please be sure to fill out all the info! Be extra-sure to fill out the time of day, composer/author, usage and duration! A sample log will be in MCR!
SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) logs are part of a statistical sampling of music used throughout the country and are used to make an equitable division of SOCAN revenues to writers and publishers of music in Canada and throughout the world. Therefore, it is extremely important for clarity and accuracy in the logs.
For the SOCAN period, be extra sure to reach your Canadian content requirements and play your favorite local/Canadian band! They'll get paid!
To find out composer/author info for the SOCAN log check the album's liner notes. If that does not provide the answer check:

4. MCR BOARD PROBLEM
One of the channels on the board is in need of repair and parts are on order. This means that Mic 2 is temporarily unavailable. Sorry for the inconvenience!

5. HELP PLAN FUNDING DRIVE 2010!
Planning meeting on Monday, March 29th, 6pm
A good, old-fashioned get together to discuss plans for Funding Drive 2010. If you're interested in joining, email Erica, and she will send you the compiled feedback from FD 2009.
Agenda:
Discuss feedback/thoughts on FD2009
Discuss potential changes for FD2010
Make action/task list for planning FD2010
Other fundraising potential? Grants, etc?
Discuss potential meeting times for future meetings

6. KEYS, PLEASE
Please, please, please be respectful of your fellow programmers and return CKDU/SUB keys to Dal Security ON THE SAME DAY that you borrow them. We have a limited supply of keys at Dal Security, and if you keep a key for days or weeks, it means other programmers have to jump through hoops (and run up and down many a stair) in order to get in to do their shows. Enough said.

7. STAFF LEAVES AND HOLIDAYS
Everyone needs a little time to themselves!
Reed Jones (Music) will be on holidays starting this Monday for two weeks. Expect him back in his office on Monday, April12th.
David Parker (Spoken Word) is taking a 4-week unpaid leave starting April 12th. David will be back in action on May 10th.

9. CKDU JAMS WITH SAGEEV OORE!
In an exclusive interview and performance, CKDU 88.1FM caught up with pianist Sageev Oore of Gypsophilia for a demonstration of his performance this Saturday.
During the Out Like A Lion Festival, Oore will be accompanying silent films with an improvised piano score. CKDU recreated the excitement with Oore by reading from a children's story, accompanied by Oore's piano, in the vast interior of the St. Paul's Anglican Church.
Listen to the interview and live performance on CKDU's Operation Wake Up, Friday March 26, between 8 am and 9 am, on 88.1FM in Halifax. Check out some shows at the Out Like a Lion http://jazzeast.com/view-events#out-like-lion
